Maintaining a Clean and Healthy Aquarium: Tips for Algae Control

Updated: Dec 7, 2024

One of the challenges of aquarium keeping is controlling algae growth. Algae can make your tank look unsightly and, in some cases, harm your fish if left unchecked.

Tips for Algae Control:

  • Limit Light Exposure: Excessive light encourages algae growth. Limit the amount of time your aquarium lights are on, ideally 6-8 hours per day.

  • Regular Water Changes: Change 10-20% of the water every week to keep nutrients in check.

  • Clean Decorations and Glass: Use an algae scraper to remove algae from the sides of the tank and clean decorations.

  • Add Algae-Eating Fish: Fish like Siamese algae eaters, snails, and otocinclus catfish can help keep algae under control naturally.

  • Avoid Overfeeding: Uneaten food leads to excess nutrients, which promote algae growth.
